OEF Volunteer Coordinator

The OEF Board of Directors is very pleased to announce that Kimberly Lewin has accepted the position of Volunteer Coordinator. Kimberly is the part-time Library Media Specialist at Jordan Bank. She brings to the Volunteer Coordinator position over 17 years of teaching experience. Before arriving in the Oxford Area School District, Kimberly was a fourth-grade-inclusion teacher with the Charles County Board of Education, Maryland. She received her Master's Degree in Leadership and moved into the media center for five years before accepting the part-time library position offered at Jordan Bank.

Kim's first hand knowledge of the workings of the school district, the programs in place, the needs of the students, and the relationships she has built with many building personnel and community members have made her quite complimentary to the existing, hardworking, OEF board.

Kimberly's duties include coordinating the volunteers who spend time working with teachers and students in the Oxford Area School District schools. She will also match mentors with students, and coordinate tutoring sessions. Kim will conduct OEF training programs and keep all volunteers compliant with the district volunteer policy.

When Oxford Area School District implemented full day kindergarten, Kimberly and her family moved to Oxford from their home minutes outside Washington, DC. Although the transition from big city to small farming community may seem daunting, she has embraced country living and has no plans of leaving Oxford.

We are very happy to welcome Kimberly and we are certain you will find her to be an enthusiastic professional who with the volunteers, mentors, tutors, and OEF Board strive to enhance the quality of education in the Oxford Area School District.

VOLUNTEER NEWS

Kim Lewin, Volunteer Coordinator

The 2016-2017 school year was very busy and very successful for the Oxford Educational Foundation! We increased the number of O.E.F. volunteers working in our schools and we tutored over twenty five students in math, science, and language arts. Our end of the year surveys indicated that both the parents and the teachers of those students were pleased with the success of our tutors. One parent even responded that using an O.E.F. tutor was "the best decision we made this year!" Some of our students even asked their tutor to continue working with them over the summer!

Our mentor program was also a great success. We have mentors working in every building in the school district. Some of our mentors have worked with the same student for many years and have developed a caring, supportive relationship with their mentee. Teacher feedback about the impact that each mentor has in the life of their mentee was overwhelmingly positive. Many teachers commented that their students were excited to come to school on the day that they were supposed to meet with their mentor!

The success of our tutors and mentors has created a challenge. There were students that we couldn't tutor because we didn't have enough volunteers to meet the need. There are students who would greatly benefit from the support of a mentor, but we don't have enough volunteers to meet the need. As we begin a new school year, it is our goal to continue recruiting members of the Oxford community that are willing and able to support the students of the Oxford Area School District. If you are interested in becoming an O.E.F. volunteer please email me at oxfordedfound@yahoo.comor call me at 610-932-7200. We will help you through the clearance process and pay any fees that are required. We will also provide training and any other support that you may need. Whether you prefer to be a tutor, mentor or assist in a classroom, O.E.F. is ready to help you with every step of the process. Please consider joining us as we work together to enhance the lives of the students in our community!

Please remember your photo ID should be worn at all times while you are in school and you are still required to sign in at the office when volunteering. If you need an ID, please contact central office at 610-932-6605.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 610-932-7200 or by email at oxfordedfound@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Kim Lewin
Volunteer Coordinator
